Queen Charlotte Track Unguided Walks
If you would like the independency of walking the Queen Charlotte Track on your own yet have everything organised and pre booked then this is the option for you.

Included is your accommodation at the lodges along the track as well as your accommodation in Picton before and after the walk, daily luggage transfers, water taxi transport to and from the track, all meals whilst you are on the track including breakfasts, packed lunches and three course evening meals and your track pass.

We will provide you with an information kit, which includes an itinerary, track information, accommodation vouchers for the lodges and a detailed map. Your overnight luggage will be transferred by boat from lodge to lodge and will be waiting for you in your room upon arrival so all you have to do is carry a light day bag containing your lunch, water bottle, and camera.

The Queen Charlotte Track is 71 km's and is considered one of the most scenic and enjoyable multi day walks in New Zealand. Top this with resort style accommodation where each private room has its own en suite and view of the ocean its easy to see why.


Itinerary for the 4 or 5 day Queen Charlotte Track Walk

Day 1
Picton to Furneaux Lodge Resort
Approx walking time 5.5 hours 14km's

Begin the day by being collected from Fernview Cottage Bed and Breakfast by one of our friendly and informative staff who will provide you with your lunch and an information kit which includes a detailed itinerary, a map of the track as well as additional information. If you have any last minute questions we will happily answer them while we go over the map with you.
Then it's onboard the water taxi which will take you up to Motuara Island, a predator free bird sanctuary. You have 1.5 hours here to walk up to the top of the hill where you will be rewarded with 360 degree, panoramic views of the outer Queen Charlotte Sound.
Over to Ship Cove from here, a historic bay where Captain James Cook spent many days from 1770.
Make your way up the track through large native trees and lush semi tropical rain forest to a view point before heading down through another picturesque bay and on to your first nights accommodation at Furneaux Lodge.

With it's ocean view suites and fine dining restaurant you will see why this award winning resort makes such a comfortable place to stay on your first night on the track.


Day 2
Furneaux Lodge - Mahana Homestead
Approx walking time 4.5 hours 11km's


No need to leave to early this morning as it is only a 4.5 hour walk around to your next lodge on the other side of the inlet at Mahana Homestead. Today's walk is mainly at sea level hugging the coastline and walking through regenerating forest filled with many small native birds. Watch out for the cheeky Weka or bush hen at lunch time or you may find your selection of delicious goodies of particular interest to this inquisitive bird.
Once you have reached Camp Bay it is only another short walk through Punga Cove before reaching Mahana Homestead where your hosts, Ann and John will be there to greet you.
Accommodation - Mahana Homestead
John and Ann have created something quite special here. The lodge has been recently renovated and purposely built for comfort in mind. All rooms have there own en-suite and attached private balcony with sea and/or bush views. The 3 course evening meal is complimented with fresh organic vegetables from their own garden and home made New Zealand deserts.


Day 3
Mahana Homestead - Portage Resort
Appox walking time 7- 8 hours 24km's


Stunning ridge top walking awaits you today with a view around every corner. There are two shelters along the trail that make ideal rest stops, both of which have toilets nearby. Your destination today is Portage Resort where a cool drink will be waiting for you on arrival.
There is an option available for those that would prefer to miss out this section and go by water taxi from Mahana to Portage. Please note this is an extra cost.
Accommodation - Portage Resort
Portage is one of the earliest built accommodation houses in the Marlborough Sounds and has been extensively renovated over the years. Today's look is contemporary with an excellent restaurant and en-suite, private rooms looking out over Kenepuru sound.

Day 4
Portage Resort - Anakiwa
Approx walking time 7 hours 20km's


After a brisk climb back up to the ridgeline and the highest point of the track you make your way down to the end of the Queen Charlotte Sound to Anakiwa and the end of the track from where you get your water taxi back to Picton. From there at the wharf you are again met by us where we will return you back to your accommodation at Fernview Cottage or if you are planning on getting the evening ferry over to Wellington we can drop you off at the terminal.

5 Day Walk as above. Day 4 is a rest day at Portage. Sea kayaking, mountain biking, swimming, sailing or just relaxing with a good book are some of the things you can do here.
The 5 day walk includes two nights at Portage Resort.
